The University of Florida Lastinger Center for Learning proudly announces the appointment of Kristi Cheyney-Collante, Ph.D., as the new Director of Early Learning & Literacy and Research Scientist. Dr. Cheyney-Collante brings a wealth of experience in early childhood education, special education and literacy development to the role. Her emphasis on advancing educational practices and commitment to creating positive change makes her an excellent addition to the Lastinger Center’s executive leadership.

As Director of Early Learning & Literacy and Research Scientist, Dr. Cheyney-Collante will lead the Lastinger Center’s early learning and literacy strategy, advancing research-based practices and scalable innovations that support educators, children and families across Florida and beyond.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Cheyney-Collante into this leadership position,” said Phil Poekert, Ph.D., Director of the Lastinger Center. “Her deep expertise, collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to educators will be instrumental in shaping the future of early learning and literacy education in our state.”

Prior to joining the Lastinger Center, Dr. Cheyney-Collante served as a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Special Education, School Psychology and Early Childhood Studies (SESPECS) at UF, where she has led numerous initiatives in teacher preparation, literacy research and family engagement. Her work as Assistant Director at the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) and as Co-PI on multiple federally funded grants has positioned her as a national leader in early literacy and special education.

“It is a privilege to step into this role at the Lastinger Center, where I’ll join a team so deeply invested in a vision where every child achieves success in school,” said Dr. Cheyney-Collante. “My professional journey has been dedicated to this vision, fueled by a strong belief that all students can thrive when supported by highly skilled and well-resourced educators. I am excited to contribute my expertise to the Center’s vital work in shaping the landscape for children in Florida and beyond.”

Dr. Cheyney-Collante joins the UF Lastinger Center in July 2025.

 

Leadership Transition

In addition, the Lastinger Center announces a leadership transition as Cathy Cavanaugh, Ph.D., Assistant Center Director, retires on July 1 after a career dedicated to transforming teaching and learning. Dr. Cavanaugh has been a driving force behind the Center’s digital learning innovations, professional learning systems, and global partnerships. Her leadership helped scale impactful educator support initiatives across Florida and internationally. 

Welcoming Tyran Butler, Ph.D. as Assistant Center Director

Succeeding Dr. Cavanaugh is Tyran Butler, Ph.D., who has been appointed as the new Assistant Center Director. Dr. Butler currently serves as Director of Early Learning and Literacy and Research Scientist, and brings extensive experience in senior administrative leadership roles, systems-level change and collaborative leadership. She has led major statewide initiatives and built strong collaborations that have advanced the Center’s impact and her appointment ensures the continued success of the Center’s ongoing efforts to research, develop and scale educational innovations that put all learners on trajectories for lifelong success.
