Flamingo Literacy Micro-Credentials

On-demand. Evidence-based. Personalized.

Created in partnership with the Florida Department of Education and the Division of Early Learning, the UF Lastinger Center for Learning’s Flamingo Literacy Micro-Credentials are available at no cost to Florida instructional personnel in an effort to create accessible and on-demand reading professional development. They give instructional personnel an opportunity to work at their own pace while implementing new instructional strategies in real-time and receiving individualized feedback and one-on-one support from an assessor.

Impacting every level of the education system

This professional development equips birth to twelfth-grade instructional personnel to: 

  • Identify literacy difficulties and determine appropriate interventions
  • Apply evidence-based practices
  • Effectively use progress monitoring and intervention materials

Through this comprehensive coaching and professional development system, the profession will be supported and elevated, allowing instructional personnel to make even greater impacts on student literacy outcomes.

How does it work?

The Flamingo Literacy Micro-Credentials are a hybrid model of online modules, instructor-supported online courses and job-embedded practicum:

Emergent

Birth through Prekindergarten

  • Birth through PreK instructional personnel
    (public or private)
  • $2,000 completion stipend for *eligible early child care personnel and early learning instructional staff
  • Builds emergent literacy knowledge and skills with high-quality content 

  • Supports language and literacy requirements for the CDA professional portfolio 

The Emergent Literacy Micro-Credential can be completed in 15 weeks.

 

Elementary

Prekindergarten through Fifth Grade

  • PreK (public or private) and kindergarten through fifth grade (public schools, including charters) instructional personnel

  • $2,000 completion stipend for *eligible early child care personnel and early learning instructional staff; OR $1,000 completion stipend for *eligible K-12 instructional personnel
  • Allows instructional personnel to teach intensive reading intervention*

  • Satisfies Competency 1 of the Reading Endorsement

  • Satisfies the 40-hour reading requirement for renewal

The Elementary Literacy Micro-Credential can be completed in 10 weeks.

Secondary

Sixth through Twelfth Grade

  • Sixth- through twelfth-grade instructional personnel
  • $1,000 completion stipend for *eligible K-12 instructional personnel (public schools, including charters)
  • Allows instructional personnel to teach intensive reading intervention
  • Satisfies Competency 1 of the Reading Endorsement
  • Satisfies the 40-hour reading requirement for renewal

The Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential can be completed in 10 weeks.

Delivery and Duration

Each micro-credential is delivered in a hybrid model of asynchronous, on-demand modules, and instructor-supported online courses and practicum.

Now enrolling! The Literacy Micro-Credentials can be completed in four months (Emergent) or 10 weeks (Elementary and Secondary).
