Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential
Already enrolled in a micro-credential? Log in!
Created in partnership with the Florida Department of Education and the Division of Early Learning, the UF Lastinger Center for Learning’s Flamingo Literacy Micro-Credentials are available at no cost to Florida instructional personnel in an effort to create accessible and on-demand reading professional development. They give instructional personnel an opportunity to work at their own pace while implementing classroom strategies in real-time and receiving individualized feedback and one-on-one support from an assessor.
How does it work?
The Elementary Literacy Micro-Credential is a comprehensive, three-part course that supports instructional personnel in building foundational knowledge, applying instructional practices, and completing job-embedded application—all aligned with the science of reading.
Parts 1, 2, and 3 are now integrated into one streamlined course!
Part 1: Foundations of Literacy – Science of Reading
Delivery Method: Self-paced, online, instructor-supported
Participants will build a strong foundation in the science of reading through in-depth exploration of:
- Oral Language
- Phonological Awareness
- Early and Advanced Decoding
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
Participants may opt to take a pre-assessment to demonstrate mastery of Part 1 content. If mastery is demonstrated, participants will move directly to Part 2.
Part 2: Instructional Practice
Delivery Method: Self-paced, online, instructor-supported
Participants will deepen their understanding of how to deliver effective reading interventions and use student data to inform instructional decisions.
Part 3
Delivery Method: Online, instructor-supported practical classroom application
Participants will apply their learning in a practicum using class exemplar data sets and case study profiles.
Class exemplar data sets will be provided for:
- Sixth-Eighth Grade
- Ninth-Twelfth Grade
Each participant will work with individual student case study data based on Cambium progress monitoring assessments.
Three assignment submissions, including a video recording of your lesson implementation, are required for successful completion. Educators will not need students for completion of assignments.
*Successful completion of all three parts of the Literacy Micro-Credential will earn 60 inservice hours/6.0 CEUs and satisfies the 40-hour reading requirement for certification renewal.
