Literacy Matrix

The Literacy Matrix, developed in collaboration with the University of Florida Literacy Institute, helps teachers develop the specialized skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective reading instruction.

Our online professional learning system is based on the science of reading and prepares teachers to:

  • effectively teach reading
  • diagnose reading issues
  • intervene appropriately using research-based strategies

Participants demonstrate evidence of their learning and receive personalized feedback from expert literacy navigators.

Intended Participants

The Literacy Matrix is available for free to:

– K-12 educators and coaches in Florida as a pathway to the Reading Endorsement
– Participation may be contingent upon district approval. Download the information flyer for more information.

2024-2025 Term Dates

October 22, 2024 – April 28, 2025

The 2024-2025 Literacy Matrix cohort will be enrolled in the Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential and Literacy Matrix coursework at the same time.

All seats are currently filled. Educators interested in the 2024-2025 Literacy Matrix cohort must complete the Program Interest Form in case seats become available.

Please note: Inactive educators or educators who do not master their coursework will be withdrawn from the program for the 2024-2025 school year. Please review the 2024-2025 Literacy Matrix Cohort course offering dates to ensure you are able to complete coursework as outlined.

Delivery and Duration

Participants can earn up to 300 hours of professional learning based on their competency needs. 

Competency 1: Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential (60 hours)
Competency 2: Application of Evidence-Based Instructional Practices (60 hours)
Competency 3: Foundations and Application of Assessment (60 hours)
Competency 4: Foundations and Application of Differentiated Instruction (60 hours)
Competency 5: Demonstration of Accomplishment (60 hours)

Important:

Educators working toward a reading endorsement will be enrolled in the Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential and Literacy Matrix courses at the same time. 

To continue in Competencies 2-5 of the Literacy Matrix coursework, educators must achieve mastery in the Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential (satisfies Competency 1).

2024-2025 Literacy Matrix Cohort

Competency 1: Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential

October 21, 2024 – February 18, 2025
Literacy Matrix participants will be enrolled in either the Elementary or Secondary Literacy Micro-Credential to satisfy Competency 1. Enroll by October 4.

October 22, 2024 – November 18, 2024

Competency 3

December 10, 2024 – January 6, 2025

Competency 4

January 14, 2025 – February 10, 2025

February 25, 2025 – April 28, 2025

Stipend Eligibility

Literacy Matrix Competencies 2-5

$2,000 completion stipend for Literacy Matrix (Lastinger Center Coursework for the Reading Endorsement)

Instructional personnel as defined in s. 1012.01(2), F.S., and Administrative personnel as defined in s. 1012.01(3)(a) and (3)(c), F.S., who work at an LEA public school or school district (including public charter schools).

  • All Literacy Matrix Competencies 2-5 must have officially begun after July 1, 2023, in the updated curriculum and standards. 
  • Complete Competencies 2-5 through the Lastinger Center Literacy Matrix.
  • At least one Literacy Matrix competency (1-5) completed after July 1, 2024. 
  • Complete all Competencies on or before April 28, 2025 (official course end dates).  
  • Apply for the Reading Endorsement with FLDOE
    • Limited to only those able to add the Reading Endorsement and not previously endorsed in reading.
    • Must be verified in FLDOE Reading Endorsement application data.

Important : Only valid Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Professional Certificate (EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION) holders are eligible to apply for the Reading Endorsement and receive a stipend. If you do not hold a FLDOE EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION, you are not eligible for this stipend.

Stipend applications for courses completed after July 1, 2024, have not yet been made available. Details regarding availability and information on how to apply for these stipends will be communicated to your email address as soon as it becomes available. Once available, learners must submit their stipend application to Lastinger Center and apply for Reading Endorsement with FDOE within 30 days of course completion and no later than June 1, 2025, whichever comes first.

– Any non-Florida public school educator
– Any private charter school, private school, or homeschool educator 
– Any Florida public school educator who is not able to register due to lack of seats
